Contribute: Save Lambeth Women’s Project Petition

16Feb09

The press has been bursting with news as rape crisis centres and women only spaces rapidly lose funding that keeps them afloat, Lambeth Women’s Project is one of these services in much need of our support.

Many of the achievements that women have made in the last forty years are under threat because of a lack of support for women’s services.

Lambeth Women’s Project (LWP) has been providing specialist services to women in south London for the past three decades. As the only women-only space in the local area it has been nothing short of a lifeline for many women.

Since 1997, when Lambeth Council withdrew financial support for the project’s salaried youth workers, LWP has been sustained by a number of volunteers who have given their time and energies because they care.

This situation is untenable. Financial and political support is urgently needed to ensure the continuation and future development of the project’s work. Not only is this support not forthcoming, Lambeth Council now appears to be challenging our use of our building – the home of LWP since 1979.

We feel that Lambeth Council should meet the needs of the community it serves. By supporting the valuable and unique services provided by Lambeth Women’s Project, the council would go some way towards fulfilling its social contract with the 53% of its citizens who are women.

The purpose of this petition is to demonstrate the strength of public support for Lambeth Women’s Project. You can show your support by signing this petition, which will be presented to decision makers to strengthen our case for:

A) A lease for the building = security
B) Recognition of the need for women-only services = safety
C) Adequate funding = maintenance and development of services
D) Policies that promote the social advancement of women = equality
